Abstract: Safety Systems have been used in the process industry for many years. The application of these Systems is often based on "best practice", experience and local rules. In 1999-2000 the IEC65108 standard “functional safety of electrical / electronic / programmable electronic safety-related systems” was released with the much revised Edition 2.0 released in 2010. The IEC 61511 standard "Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process industry" was released in 2003.

These international standards have changed the way Functional safety is implemented and maintained during the life cycle of a plant. It has become the worldwide reference for all activities in relation to Functional safety.

The Safety Lifecycle, which consists of sixteen phases that start at the concept phase of a system and end at the system’s usage expiration, defines necessary activities for these phases.

The IEC 61508 follows its safety lifecycle for configuring and maintaining Safety Systems accordingly. As the Safety Lifecycle is considered as a framework to minimize the systematic failure caused by human errors, persons involved in the implementation of the safety functions need to understand the requirements of the Safety Lifecycle well and follow them. As part of the safety lifecycle, the three planning phases for Operation and Maintenance, Safety Validation, and Installation and Commissioning are required prior to actual implementation phases.

This presentation will explain the implementation of phases applicable to any software forming part of a safety-related system. The scope of IEC 61508 requires that the software safety functions and software systematic capability establishes requirements for safety lifecycle phases and activities which shall be applied during the design and development of the safety-related software.
