Automated upstream production optimization by means of embedded intelligence in IIoT devices.

Digitalization

Abstract: Technology advancements have allowed automation solution manufacturers to create self-aware, process and system aware devices that can acquire, diagnose and optimize a given process with minimal human intervention by using proven algorithms, allowing available human resources to focus on exceptional process conditions and take corrective actions in a timely manner thus accelerating the optimization cycles. These devices can also provide with self-diagnostics to support the asset management process.

It has been a matter of debate in upstream oil & gas about how much automated optimization should we deploy in our artificial lift systems, well test facilities, pipelines and gathering center and what portion of it should be kept under direct human supervision.

The purpose of this document is to explore a methodology to define those activities that, given available technology can be delegated to machines and those which should be kept exclusively under human control.
