Abstract:

  • PETRONAS Refinery conducted its fire and gas mapping exercise in 2011. The fire and gas mapping recommendations were to be implemented in phases according to the roll out plan.
  • Challenges faced during the implementation of the recommendation for tank-farm areas are: 1) Scarcity of spare junction boxes at site 2) High risk involved when laying new cables for detectors especially when excavation is involved 3) Installation and commissioning of new detectors have to be done online while plant is running 4) Remote location such as tank farms makes it difficult for cable routing with bund walls and road crossings.
  • Solution was using Wireless gas detectors. Success factors in the selection of the technology are 1) Proven in use 2)Product maturity 3) Compliance to ISA100.11a wireless communication standard 4) Satisfies IEC60079-29-1 performance requirements 5) Interoperability with existing wireless network and host DCS 6) Used for monitoring purpose only.
  • This paper subsequently describe factory acceptance testing taken and the success story of the implementation.
