Reducing Uncertainty of Measurement with Advanced Ultrasonic Meter technology

Abstract: This paper presentation will cover advancements in Ultrasonic Flow Meter technology allowing for insensitivity to installation effects and viscosity changes. The base technology of the ultrasonic transit-time flow meter is very well understood and accepted across many industries. For liquid oil pipelines, ultrasonic meters provide many benefits over traditional mechanical meter technologies, and are becoming more prevalent within the industry. This paper will cover advancements in design of the flow body, plus the addition of 4 chord locations to counteract swirl and other installation disturbances. We will cover, in detail, test results that prove out the concept across a wide range of operating viscosities. This ability for the flow meter to perform under such changing conditions provides significant benefits to pipeline operators looking to reduce the number of false alarms in their leak detection system, or to parties who need to reduce overall uncertainty for complex custody transfer systems."
