Turbo machinery control and safeguarding

Turbomachinery Controls

Abstract: In a globally challenging market, the oil, gas and chemical industry is looking at IoT technologies to maintain a profitable and reliable operation.

To support the process industries, a dedicated solution has been designed for the rotating equipment such as motors, pumps, compressors and fans. This solution includes a set of sensors: the SmartSensors to monitor the health of LV electrical motors and the WiMon that monitors the health or rotating equipment bearings. The data from these sensors, together with the data coming from other available sources are then analyzed in the ABB service-enabling platform, the ABB ServicePort; this platform offers a dedicated application for the rotating equipment, covering all the aspects, such as process and control system performance, mechanical and electrical condition. The main focus of this application is to enable more proactive and predictive maintenance strategies; moreover when the ServicePort on an industrial site is connected to the ABB Ability cloud infrastructure, advanced monitoring and diagnostic services are enabled, without impacting the safe and cyber-secure operation the plant.

A case study about the cooperation with BASF in Ludwigshafen, Germany, to develop and test this solution, is presented.
