Need of process data validation in design of flow meters for the required applications in Oil and Gas industry

Abstract: Design success starts with defining the exact intent of the flow meter application as well as full understating of process parameters boundary values are the key drivers in the whole story of meter selection and engineering process. Nevertheless materials of construction, dimensions including the design pressure & temperature are too the order of importance in this framework. In oil and gas industry at a time multiple projects are taking place at various levels and phases intern most projects takes progressive developmental path affects on the availability of proper design inputs will ultimately results into serious issues when the projects gets into fully matured state. Lack of data in the beginning will holds the design process and in the end project management elements together with schedule, cost and quality imposes rush to push the design teams to work using raw data without being validating against various scenarios to verify the boundary conditions including external factors such as piping influences all contributes to add unknown uncertainties to the design process. There is definite need entail from the current practice to check the source data to be validated against the scenarios mostly the process phase changes, covering dominant production phase instead of scaling from early till end phase. Other critical parameters are also of utmost important in the flow meter design for variety of reasons like the application modes are varied such as high water cut, flare gas higher dew point, dual phase gas/ liquid and liquid /gas, under and over sized lines, velocity profiles, material selection, calibration, configurations, installation & commissioning.

All these issues are addressed by adopting the source data validation technique in phased manner and setting the exact performance criteria and define the boundary limits and notifying the effected stakeholders and design accordingly resolves the uncertainties engaged in the flow meter design.
