Enhancing Performance & Availability of Critical Analyzers

Abstract: The process analyzers and applications need a blend of multi-disciplinary knowledge of chemistry, chemical engg, process, instrumentation, electronics and mechanical.

The resources to understand and maintain these devices are not available readily. The expertise is developed by working with multi disciplinary departments and functions over many decades.

The analyzer maintenance expertise in our industry is on decline as the old experienced hands are retiring. The younger generation are more computer savvy but less interested in dirtying their hands and the demands in the industry is expecting them to perform overnight.

Under these circumstances – it is the responsibility of the Analyzer community to simplify the widely used complex analyzers such as GC and add more intelligence to the analyzers – so the relatively new maintenance personnel can easily interpret the data and take advantage of the predictive maintenance features to enhance the performance and availability of the complex analyzers such as GC.

Approach:

The approach is focusing around 2 areas – both blended with “User Friendliness”:

  • How to make the interpretation of analyzer data simple
  • How to add more diagnostics and intelligence to the analyzers with the objective of enhancing the performance and availability while reducing the maintenance time, utilities and parts spent.
Addressing the Challenges:

This paper addresses the challenges above and describes how the complex Process Gas Chromatographs have evolved - in to simpler user friendly devices. A few key areas for simplification and user friendliness are the following:
  • Chromatogram Interpretation – Starting point for any GC trouble shooting
    • Chromatograms are like ECG for a human heart. They have all embedded information of the health of a GC. Key is the interpretation of the Chromatograms - which could be complex as the peaks are coming out of several valve sequences.
    • Issue is to figure out – which valve sequence is not working in a complex time based analysis. Modern GCs break down the complex analysis in to simpler component based valve sequences to simplify the trouble shooting.
    • Break down a long complex analysis in to simple smaller parallel analysis. Multiple detectors / Multiple ovens. 2 advantages. One is speed. Second is ease of understanding the chromatogram.
    • Chromatogram overlay
  • Validation of Data , reducing - down time, utilities and parts and predictive maintenance – using supervisory softwares at the GC level and also at the plant level
    • Adding intelligence at the GC level to qualify and validate data
    • Monitoring all GC parameters using a watch dog software such as Virtual Technician Software
    • Statistical analysis of data, Comparison with laboratory etc. using Amadas Software.
    • Prediction of failure - so – maintenance can be scheduled.
